The careful level design is what makes 1943 so much fun, and it really feels tailored to the other design choices DICE has made.

Streamlined options and the inclusion of destructible scenery are great additions, but this is only part of what makes 1943 so easy to get lost in. Even so, the destroyable bits still change the tactics available to players in previous WW2-based Battlefield games. I only wish that 1943 took it to the extent that I've seen in the upcoming Bad Company 2, as in 1943 only specific portions of buildings can be blown out, and terrain deformation is absent.

The result is that players are constantly adapting their strategy via the use of explosives to blow out the walls of buildings, or even blasting apart a chain link fence that's in the way. DICE uses the Frostbite tech made famous in Battlefield: Bad Company, which allows levels to have tons of destructible buildings. Giving players fewer class options and getting rid of ammo counts allows the game to focus on the battle, and this is great since explosives alter combat strategy in 1943.

Some people will likely cry foul that it's being made this way to accommodate newcomers, but to me it just seems like DICE has learned from its other games and thus eliminated parts of the Battlefield formula that convoluted the player's experience. Never once was I worried about what I was going to do after I ran out of ammo, or what load-out to pick to counter what had just killed me: I just focused on the overall fight. While these changes do take away from potential player choice - players can't select their load-outs or customize them like in Call of Duty 4 - they also make it so you focus on the fight at hand rather than your equipment. And while you still have to reload a weapon when it's empty, you have an infinite supply of ammo to draw upon. For instance, there are only three classes to pick, but these manage to give your team all the weapons and support items they'll need to take on the various vehicles and terrain in each level. The player's role in all of this is to work with their team, engage the enemy in FPS combat, and push them out of the way in an effort to dominate the map.ġ943 provides the same type of play as other Battlefield games have in the past, but boils everything down to the basics. The team that's holding the majority of the flags makes the opposing army's health tick away (represented as a life bar in 1943), with the first team to have no life left being the loser. And yes, it is a downloadable game - and therefore of smaller scope than developer DICE's other offerings in the franchise - but it still provides three excellent levels (with a fourth coming soon) that, along with several other small but important changes, deliver a streamlined and fulfilling Battlefield experience.įor the uninitiated, Battlefield games pit two armies against one another in a contest of who can control strategic points on the map. If you take scenarios like the one above - only combined with the occasional totally non-realistic occurrence (like someone jumping out of a plane for no good reason) and a fair amount of stupid Internet chatter - you'll have a pretty good idea of how Battlefield 1943 plays and the type of stories you'll end up telling. but I doubt for long.īattlefield 1943 is one of those games that you tell stories about when you're standing around with your buddies. In the end the base is still in the hands of the Japanese army. He hears my Zero and tries to fire on me with his Thompson, but it does hardly any damage and leaves him open to the combination of my high-caliber machine guns and bombs. I pull back on the throttle, slowing myself significantly and coming around for a steep dive.

Flying high above the island I can see an American jeep racing towards an unguarded base below.
